The Design Principle
If you do not like the results, redesign the system.
Twelve principles define how we think about organizations, leadership, performance, value creation, continuous improvement, enterprise value, and the freedom that world-class performance ultimately creates.
Together, they form the operating philosophy behind Tennyson Knapp Consulting and the Investment Grade Business Engineering approach to building stronger, more durable, and more valuable organizations.
Explore the 12 Principles See How We Apply ThemBusinesses are systems. Their results emerge from the interaction of purpose, people, leadership, strategy, processes, technology, economics, incentives, measurement, and countless daily decisions. Sustainable improvement requires understanding and intentionally engineering those relationships.
Before improving an organization, leaders must understand why it exists, recognize that its current results are being produced by its current design, and accept responsibility for intentionally engineering better performance.
If you do not like the results, redesign the system.
Mission defines purpose. Value creation sustains purpose.
Performance should be engineered rather than left to chance.
Stop treating recurring results as isolated events. Results are evidence of how the organization is currently designed. Clarify purpose, study the system, and intentionally redesign what must change.
Organizations create sustainable economic value through people. Leadership aligns those people around purpose, develops capability, and creates the conditions in which each Business Segment can repeatedly create value for customers and stakeholders.
Sustainable value creation requires balancing customers, employees, vendors, communities, owners, and investors without undermining the total system.
Leadership creates direction, capability, execution, adaptation, and accountability throughout the organization.
Each Segment must intentionally generate demand and move orders through an effective Value Stream to create customer and economic value.
Leadership must do more than set direction. It must create the organizational capability required to generate demand, fulfill that demand effectively, and create sustainable value across the stakeholder system.
Leaders cannot manage a complex enterprise through intuition alone. They need instrumentation, disciplined learning, and systems thinking to understand why results occur and determine what should be redesigned.
Business instrumentation tells leaders where the organization is, where it is heading, and whether decisions are producing the intended results.
Research → Redesign → Rebuild. Never stop learning; never stop engineering.
Sustainable solutions require understanding interactions among people, process, technology, finance, strategy, structure, incentives, culture, leadership, and other connected systems before redesigning the organization.
Measure what matters. Learn from what the measurements reveal. Understand how the parts of the enterprise interact before changing them. Then Research, Redesign, and Rebuild the system continuously.
Investment Grade Businesses do more than perform well today. They remain relevant as conditions change, convert organizational excellence into durable enterprise value, and create greater freedom and strategic choice for stakeholders.
Adaptation protects relevance. Purpose preserves identity.
Enterprise value is earned through organizational excellence.
Strong organizations become preferred choices for exceptional employees, customers, vendors, investors, lenders, acquisition partners, and communities. High performance does not merely improve results. High performance increases freedom.
Continuously adapt to preserve relevance. Build organizational excellence so value becomes durable and transferable. The result is more than better financial performance: it is greater choice, resilience, and freedom.
The principles form a progression from understanding why an organization exists and how it is designed, through creating and measuring value, to building an adaptive, valuable enterprise capable of creating greater freedom and strategic choice.
